It’s not like me to write about a bakery.
I mean, why would I, the owner of a business dedicated to a strict gluten, grain, and soy-free lifestyle write about a bakery in Licking County?
It comes down to the talented and caring people who own Dizurts Custom Cakes and More in Heath, and quite frankly, their integrity.
When I first spoke with the owner, Tracy, I learned that she had multiple customer requests for gluten-free items. We discussed the possibility of providing my company’s products for her customers, but she wanted to be sure that the gluten-free items she offered wouldn’t be cross-contaminated.

THE CHALLENGE OF SHOPPING FOR GLUTEN-FREE IN A TRADITIONAL BAKERY
Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It is the binder that holds bread together, but it’s also a thickener used in many other products (example: ranch dressing). Gluten is like glue - it sticks to everything, including pans and utensils; it lives in the fryer where breaded items are fried, and it’s in the air of any bakery that uses flour. (By the way, I learned all of this kind of the hard way…first, my body taught me, and then I became a certified coach. I have Celiac Disease, and although cross-contamination may mean just the equivalent of a crumb on my plate, trust me…you would not want to be around me if that happened!)
Because of my no-crumbs-of-gluten and grain-free lifestyle, I came to recognize that I wasn’t the only one having these experiences. I started my company The Gluten & Grain Free Gourmet to accommodate those with similar lifestyles. All of our ingredients are made from scratch, and our products are made in a strictly dedicated gluten, grain, and soy-free facility. We tightly seal each item in specially-designed packaging to prevent cross-contamination from anywhere they might land: farmer’s markets, universities, grocery stores, and even bakeries.
A PARTNERSHIP BORN BY CARING FOR QUALITY
When I realized that Tracy and her husband Michael were very aware of the contamination issue, but still wanted to serve their customers, a new partnership was born. As talented as Tracy is, she could have easily created and produced a line of gluten-free baked goods, but instead she wanted to ensure that her customers could safely avoid the cross-contamination issue.
In the short time I’ve been working with Tracy and Michael, I’ve been amazed by how much they care for their customers and the quality of everything they do. They work day and night to provide beautiful cakes, cookies, cupcakes and other desserts to the communities of Heath, Newark and Licking County.
Dizurts began carrying items from The Gluten & Grain Free Gourmet and can now safely serve all of their customers a selection of gluten and grain-free cupcakes, cookies, specialty cakes, and more.
I took these photos of their yummies, and while I can’t personally speak for how they taste, there are some fantastic reviews on Yelp and Facebook that address the exact level of delicious (which is apparently very high!) What I CAN personally attest to is how quality, integrity, and kindness are woven into everything that they do.
This quaint bakery, and its talented, caring owners are not to be missed.
