After a breakout first season at the Canal Market District (CMD), CMD organizers are planning another big year for the new downtown venue. The farmers market returns May 5th, while the art and craft market opens May 13th. Later in the month on May 19th, Canal Market District will host a Spring Kickoff celebration to welcome the community back to market season and raise funds for the continued operation of the markets.
“One of our goals for this year is to really build on 2016 and bring new people to Downtown Newark on a regular basis. The Spring Kickoff is all about making new friends and welcoming back old ones,” said CMD Executive Director Jazz Glastra. “What better way to ‘Kickoff” the season than with a big community barbecue?”
BARBECUE TRIO, BEER/WINE, & MUSIC
The Spring Kickoff will feature a local food barbecue prepared by three of central Ohio’s best barbecue joints: Moe’s Original BBQ, Barrel and Boar, and RayRay’s Hog Pit. Kids’ options will be available. The event will also feature beer and wine available for purchase, live music from three local acts, kids’ activities, and educational materials.
5 pm - Brad Fuller
6 pm - Liz Redrow and Robin Brown
7 pm - Jazz Hat
RAFFLE & SILENT AUCTION
To raise money for the market’s operations, organizers will offer a raffle and silent auction. The raffle prize is an overnight “glamping” (glamorous camping) experience and a locally sourced breakfast the next morning at Orchard House B&B in Granville. The Spring Kickoff’s silent auction features a collection of other unique local experiences—from soap making with one of the craft market vendors, to glass blowing at The Works, to getting a hands-on tour of the brewery at Homestead Beer Company. All proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit Canal Market District.
The event is also generously sponsored by First Federal Savings and Explore Licking County.
BUY YOUR KICKOFF TICKETS NOW
The event will take place alongside the regular Friday farmers market, so attendees will still have a chance to do their shopping. Reservations are available for $20 ($10 for children) on Canal Market District’s webpage and include entrance to the event and a barbecue dinner.
