^ Babieh’s first day is a busy one. Here, the phone is glued to his ear as he takes a procession of orders at the spacious West Main location.
The familiar red picnic tables are here along with their red and white umbrellas. The faded red inflated dancing man is here too. And, the familiar warm smile on the face of Alaa Babieh is greeting customers just like he always does. All is right with the world.
Skorpios Gyros opened for business today in their new downtown Newark location of the former Brick Alley Donuts at 56 W Main Street. With a front door, tables and chairs, counters and stools, sidewalk cafe seating, and restrooms, Skorpios Gyros has officially become a restaurant. For the moment, the menu is only slightly abbreviated. But, that will change in the days ahead. Traditional gryos still take center stage in choice of lamb, chicken, or beef. Salads, vegetarian dishes, and seafood are still available too.

YOU MUST ORDER STUFFED GRAPE LEAVES OR FALAFEL
It’s easy to get in the habit of always ordering a gyro with Alaa’s famous Greek seasoned fries, but you are making a mistake if you do not regularly treat yourself to the hand-rolled stuffed grape leaves or his homemade falafel. These vegetarian grape leaves literally melt in your mouth and the falafel is perfect, golden crisp exterior with a moist, cake-like center.
BAKLAVA ON YOUR HOLIDAY TABLE
^ Baklava trays are a popular holiday dessert.
Everyone talks about the homemade baklava at Skorpios and for a reason. It is that good. Now is the time to place your order for a baklava tray to have in time for your holiday table.
